Some find Machine Learning scary including myself. It's scary to think that machines can take over many parts of our daily lives, but in reality, machines already play a vital part in the business world. There is alot of information we can learn from the business world to develop new ways to teach in eLearning. Netflix is a great example of machine learning and how the data is used to learn about the person and how to accommodate the business to meet the individual's personality and needs. This could be very useful in eLearning and education technology of the future. Let's compare apples to oranges and look at some eLearning possibilities.
What is Meta-Cognition?
As humans we use our minds to think about concepts and the world, that is called cognition. Meta-cognition takes it a bit further and describes the action we take with the information we learned. For example, after watching the Netflix video above on YouTube, this blog post is the action I took to explain the information. The video itself is also an action to explain a concept. The new action stands on the shoulder of the learned information.
Why is Netflix valuable and massively successful?
Meta-cognition is evident in the development of Netflix. Here are some examples of how pattern recognition and meta-cognition were used.
How can we apply Meta-Cognition to Learning?
As an Learning Designer, the goal is not to just present the information the most beautiful way possible, the design should also help the student develop their own ideas individually and/or through collaborative learning. For example, a teacher who wants their students to create new thoughts and ideas about entrepreneurship can create a lesson plan around popular television shows or companies that are a part of everyday life and motivate the learners to study the successes and failures of the business and come up with their own ideas. Netflix wasn't always Netflix!
