Meta-cognition and Concept Mapping

Concept Mapping
Concept Mapping reminds me of my high school English class and how my teacher asked us to brainstorm our ideas prior to writing an essay. This simple exercise was useful to clear through our thoughts before committing to carrying out the task of writing.

Meta-cognition
In the video, Teacher Toolkit: Concept Maps (High School) explain how concept mapping helps explain the relationship between concept and application of the knowledge. Teachers can use this method to:
  • Determine what type of information the students should know.
  • Choose the right (concept) map to fit your data.
  • Very Visual to help compare and contrast ideas.

Instructional Design: Learning Disabilities in the Workplace 2020

As an eLearning professional, I have an interest in learning how to design content to be inclusive to all disabilities. My curiosity is sparked with learning disabilities because they are often disabilities that are not visible to an untrained eye. The person with the learning disability itself may or may not know they have a condition or may not be open to expressing it.

According to the Mayo Clinic, 15% of the US population has a learning disability. The following video lists the most common learning disabilities.  Click here to view the video.

  1. Dyslexia: Learning letters and numbers, sounds of letters, blending sounds.
  2. Dyscalculia: (Math Disability/ Dyscalculia) Difficulty processing numerical information and/or math story problems.
  3. Dysgraphia: (Writing Disability/Disorder of written expression) Difficulty with the action or mechanics of writing and content.

Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition, and Meta-cognition in Learning

Some find Machine Learning scary including myself. It's scary to think that machines can take over many parts of our daily lives, but in reality, machines already play a vital part in the business world. There is alot of information we can learn from the business world to develop new ways to teach in eLearning. Netflix is a great example of machine learning and how the data is used to learn about the person and how to accommodate the business to meet the individual's personality and needs. This could be very useful in eLearning and education technology of the future. Let's compare apples to oranges and look at some eLearning possibilities.

Collaborative Intelligence Through eLearning

In my opinion, businesses that want to survive in the long term should harness the value they currently have such as their employees - and guess what? You can produce change management through learning and education. Empowering people through learning and collaboration makes people feel valued and will work much harder for you than a company that doesn't value the opinions of everyone in the company.  Maybe that is just crazy talk, but maybe not!

I am a fan of Rosetta Stone, and found it to be incredibly useful with advanced features such as live tutoring. It's the next best thing to having personal coach. The platform can be perfect for someone looking to commit to a program and totally immerse themselves in learning a language. Duolingo is FREE and perfect for people on-the-go. Casual learners who want to invest sporadic investments of time.  The software includes fun animations and includes online community gaming options.

This weekend, I attended the Udemy Global Summit in San Francisco hosted July 27th - July 29th. My intention for attending the conference was to learn more about the platform and determine if it fits with my career path in eLearning and Instructional Design. I left feeling great about the platform and what it can do for me professionally. Some benefits I see in using the platform for academic and marketplace instructors are as follows:

Kateri Tekakwitha Fund: Presentation Design

Images express a thousand words. I designed the following Facebook Covers for the Kateri Tekakwitha Fund, a non-profit based in the Bay Area. The image they previously had was good, but it lacked the message about what they do. If someone stumbles across your organization page and doesn't have some immediate information about your organization, you may lose a potential donor. You don't want to leave out that important information.

Learning Theory: Personalized Alternative Learning Models

In my undergraduate studies, I remember some classes were very easy for me while other classes were more challenging. When it came to certain complex subjects such as statistics, math, and economics, I didn't fully understand the materials presented right away. Determined to graduate, I signed up math tutoring after class and would attend regularity. However, when I would get stumped on a problem, the tutors would just solve the problem for me without allowing me to develop my own reasoning and learning for the material to repeat the process myself. The answer would suddenly seem clear and obvious until the next problem would present itself. Since I was not guided on how to understand and work out the problem independently, I did not absorb the full learning experience.

Instructional Technology: PowToon: Welcome, Introduction, or Meeting Videos

I love using Powtoon to create videos. The tool is one of the best and most user friendly I have come across. Students and educators receive a discounted subscription, but you may have to reach out to them for the discount. The general format of the presentation design tools are awesome, but I do not necessarily like the audio recorder in the program. You would need to record audio separately with a more advanced tool such to manage background noise and  static because the audio system in this program is not that advanced.
